Youth sizing is where children's clothing stops being about practicality and starts being about how the shirt looks. From around five, kids notice fit. A tee that is too short in the body or too wide at the shoulder gets quietly avoided no matter how good the graphic is.
The youth block adds length through the torso and takes width out of the shoulder and hip. Sleeves get longer. The neck rib is smaller, since head clearance is no longer the constraint it was at two. The result sits closer to how an adult tee is proportioned, scaled down.
Between five and fourteen a child typically gains two to three inches a year, most of it in the legs and torso. That means a youth tee usually fits well for a year and passably for a second if you buy the top of the range. Sizing up one step at purchase is nearly always the better call.
Broadly five to fourteen. S for five to seven year olds, M for seven to nine, L for nine to eleven and XL for eleven to fourteen, with plenty of overlap either side.
Longer, yes. Wider, barely. Youth S adds more than two inches of body length but takes width out of the hip compared with 5T, so a stockier five year old may still prefer 5T.
Yes, and many do from about eight. Go up one or two sizes for the longline look without losing the shoulder line entirely.
Cotton is comfortable but holds sweat longer than a technical fabric. Fine for recess and casual play, less ideal for a competitive practice.
Cold water, inside out, and out of direct sun when drying. Sunlight fades dyed cotton faster than washing does.
