Toddler tees have one design problem that outweighs the rest: the head. A neck opening cut to adult proportions will not clear a two year old's skull, and the resulting struggle is why so many shirts end up with a stretched, wavy collar by month three. Ours use an oversized ribbed neck with a taped seam, which passes over the head easily and springs back.
The toddler block is roomier through the body than the youth block, with a shorter sleeve and a slightly shorter length. That leaves room to climb, reach and sit without the hem riding up, and room for a long sleeve base layer underneath in winter without the tee pulling tight across the chest.
A toddler tee gets washed two to three times a week. Over a year that is roughly a hundred and fifty cycles, far more than an adult shirt sees in the same period. The fabric is a mid-weight combed cotton chosen for exactly that: light enough to stay comfortable, dense enough not to go transparent at the shoulders after a season.
As a rough guide, 2T suits about 1.5 to 2 years, 3T 2 to 3 years, 4T 3 to 4 years and 5T 4 to 5 years, but the overlap is significant. Measure height and chest and use the size chart.
5T is the wider, shorter shape. Youth S is barely wider but more than two inches longer in the body, and narrower at the shoulder. A stocky five year old is usually more comfortable in 5T; a tall, slim one gets longer wear from youth S.
The ribbed collar is taped shoulder to shoulder, which is what stops the slow sag you get on untaped tees. Pull the shirt off by the hem rather than the neck and it will hold its shape.
Combed cotton with a direct-to-garment print, so no plastic panel on the chest and no rough transfer edge. The label is tear-away, so there is no tag to scratch. If your toddler reacts to seams, turn the tee inside out for the first few wears.
Low heat only. High heat is what shrinks cotton past the tolerance built into the pattern, and it also ages any print faster than washing does.
