Black is the most practical base color in children's clothing and the least discussed. Mud, chocolate, marker and grass all disappear on it in a way they never do on white or pastel. If you are buying one tee for a week of daycare or a long car trip, black is the rational choice.
Printing bright artwork on a dark garment means laying down a white underbase first, so the color on top reads as itself rather than sinking into the fabric. It is the step that keeps a yellow or a red looking right. It also means a black tee carries more ink than a white one, which is worth knowing when you wash it: inside out, cold, and out of the dryer where you can.
Black cotton fades mainly from sunlight and hot water, not from washing itself. Wash cold and inside out, and dry away from a sunny window. A black tee treated that way stays dark for years; one dried on a south-facing line goes gray in a season.
Marginally, in direct sun. In shade or indoors the difference is negligible, and cotton breathes either way.
Slowly, and mostly from sunlight. Cold water, inside out, and drying out of direct sun keeps it dark.
Yes. A white underbase sits beneath the color so bright inks read properly rather than sinking into the dark fabric.
The solid black is. Black in a heather or vintage finish is a cotton-rich blend, as heathers always are. The product page lists the composition for the color you pick.
It is arguably the best color for toddlers, since it hides the daily damage better than anything else.
